Trump announced a new round of tariffs, with imported patented drugs facing a 100% tariff

US President Donald Trump announced a new round of punitive tariffs on Thursday (September 25). Starting from October 1, a 100% tariff will be imposed on imported brand-name or patented drugs, a 25% tariff on all imported heavy-duty trucks, and a 50% tariff on imported kitchen cabinets.

Trump also said that he would impose a 30% tariff on imported upholstered furniture starting from next week.

Reuters reported that Trump posted on the Social media platform Truth Social on Thursday night, saying that to protect American truck manufacturers from "unfair external competition", he will impose restrictions on all "heavy (large!)" trucks produced in other parts of the world starting from October 1, 2025. A 25% tariff is imposed on "trucks".

He said that this move would benefit companies such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner and Mack Trucks, "protecting them from fierce external (competition) impacts".

Trump later announced on Truth Social that the United States would impose a 100% tariff on imported brand-name or patented drugs starting from October 1. If these pharmaceutical companies have already started building factories in the United States, they will not be subject to tariffs.

He said that the new tariffs on kitchens, bathrooms and some furniture were imposed because the import volume of such items was huge and harmed the interests of American manufacturers.

Trump pointed out that other countries have allowed these products to "flood" the United States on a large scale and once again mentioned national security concerns about the US manufacturing industry.

Trump previously launched several national security investigations to assess the possibility of imposing new tariffs on various imported products.

The US Chamber of Commerce urged the US Department of Commerce not to impose new tariffs, stating that the top five import sources are Mexico, Canada, Japan, Germany and Finland, "all of which are Allies or close partners of the United States and do not pose a threat to US national security."
