The US State Department urged US citizens to leave Iran immediately on Monday (January 12).

According to reports from Xinhua News Agency and AFP, the US State Department issued a "security warning" on the 12th, asking US citizens to "consider leaving Iran by land via Armenia or Turkey under the premise of ensuring safety".

The "Safety Warning" stated that due to the "escalation" of domestic protests in Iran, it advised US citizens to "formulate a departure plan that does not rely on the assistance of the US government", and indicated that if US citizens in Iran are unable to leave, they should look for safe places within their residences or other safe buildings and stock up on food, water, medicine and other necessities.

US President Trump announced on the Social media platform Truth Social that afternoon that any country that has business dealings with Iran will be subject to a 25% tariff when conducting any business dealings with the United States.

Trump said that this was a "final" decision and would take effect "immediately".

White House Press Secretary Levitt said earlier that in the face of the current situation in Iran, Trump believes that diplomacy is the "preferred" option, but if he deems it necessary, "he will not hesitate to use the US military," and added that "air strikes are just one of many options."

Trump disclosed the day before that the Iranian leadership had called the US side to request negotiations and the two sides were arranging a meeting. But he also said that considering the domestic situation in Iran, the United States may have to take action before the meeting and is exploring some "very strong options". Iran has indicated that it is ready for war or dialogue and claimed that the domestic situation is "completely under control".

Recently, large-scale anti-government demonstrations have broken out in Iran. Trump has repeatedly warned that if Iran uses force against the demonstrators, the United States will intervene.
