Iran has announced a new mechanism for monitoring maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Both Washington and Tehran claim to control this crucial waterway.
The New York Times reported on Tuesday (May 5th) that according to the new mechanism announced by Iran on the 5th, ships seeking to pass through the Strait of Hormuz will receive an email from the "Strait of the Persian Gulf Administration", which will list the regulations for vessel passage.
The English-language news TV station Press TV, operated by the Iranian government, said that ships must abide by these regulations and can only pass through the strait after obtaining permission.
The specific operation methods of the new mechanism in Iran, the regulations for transit, and how Iran will deal with violations remain unclear.
The New York Times asked the newly established "Persian Gulf Strait Authority" for more details, but did not receive an immediate response. According to Press TV, the new mechanism for the Strait of Hormuz has already been put into operation.
The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy posted a message on social media on the same day, warning ships attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz that the only safe route is the designated maritime corridor in Iran. Iran will take action against any ships that deviate from the safe route.
The report states that Iran's new passage mechanism in the strait seems to be aimed at asserting Iran's sovereignty over this blocked waterway. One fifth of the world's oil and natural gas is transported through the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Trump responded by imposing a blockade on Iranian ports by the US military, and proposed the "Freedom Plan" by which the US Navy would facilitate the passage of stranded ships through the strait. However, this plan seems to have had little effect.
Trump announced the suspension of the "Freedom Plan" on Truth Social in the Eastern Time Zone of the United States on the evening of the 5th (morning of the 6th in Singapore time). He stated that the US military operation against Iran has achieved great success, and significant progress has been made in reaching a comprehensive final agreement with Iranian representatives. At the request of Pakistan and other countries, both sides agreed to suspend the "Freedom Plan" while the blockade remains fully in effect, "in order to observe whether the agreement can be ultimately finalized and signed."
Donald Trump is embroiled in the biggest corruption controversy in American history over a secret fund. Reports indicate he plans to allocate $1.8 billion to reward those attempting to manipulate the 2020 election results, an act considered a direct theft of taxpayer money.
