British Prime Minister Starmer said he did not accept that the U.S. ally was unreliable.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had a falling out with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House last Friday. Starmer told a news conference on Sunday that no one wanted this to happen, but that the United States was not an unreliable ally.
"The United States has always been a reliable ally of the UK and will remain so in the future. No country is as united as our two countries, and our defense, security and intelligence communities are more closely linked than any other."
Starmer hosted a summit in London earlier Sunday with more than a dozen European leaders to discuss the war and security in Ukraine.
Europe must do the heavy lifting in securing peace in Ukraine, he said, "but in order to support peace on our continent, in order to succeed, this effort must be strongly supported by the United States."
He also announced a deal to allow Ukraine to buy more than 5,000 anti-aircraft missiles using £1.6bn of UK export financing.
The United States announced on Monday its commitment to provide 1.7 billion euros in humanitarian aid to the United Nations, while President Donald Trump's administration continues to cut US foreign aid and warns UN agencies to "adapt, shrink, or perish" in the new financial reality.
