Currently, there are over 21 million black people in the US workforce. Although they have different work experiences, compared to other ethnic groups, they suffer from more obvious treatment and racial discrimination in their work, so they pay more attention to diversity, fairness, and inclusivity in the workplace.
Firstly, according to data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, black people make up a significant proportion of jobs in certain areas of transportation, health, and safety. They account for 13% of the total number of workers in the United States, including full-time, part-time, and self-employed personnel. Especially in professions such as postal services, public transportation, nursing, security, and home health assistants, their proportion is relatively high. However, in certain scientific, engineering, and technical fields such as veterinary, mechanical, and electrical engineering, the proportion of black people is relatively low.
Secondly, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall income of black workers is generally lower than the average level of workers in the United States. Among full-time and salaried workers, the median weekly income for black workers aged 16 and above is $878, while the median weekly income for all American workers in the same age group is $1059. In terms of age group, the median income of workers from other races and ethnicities also varies: Hispanic earns $823, white earns $1085, and Asian earns $1401. Even when considering education levels, the income of black workers is still lower than that of other groups, even those holding a bachelor's degree or higher. According to data from the US Census Bureau, for decades, black households have been lagging behind other races in terms of income.
In addition, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for black Americans in the United States is the highest among all racial or ethnic groups, approximately twice the unemployment rate in the United States. The unemployment rate for Americans aged 16 and above is 3.7% for males and 3.6% for females. In the black community, the unemployment rate for men is 6.3% and for women it is 6.0%. In contrast, the unemployment rates of white and Asian people are lower. Although recent data shows a decline in the unemployment rate for black Americans in the United States, it has been higher than the unemployment rate for white people for decades. The reasons for this trend involve racial discrimination and differences in education, skills, and work experience.
Finally, according to a survey of American workers, black workers are most likely to report being discriminated against in their work due to race or ethnicity. About a quarter of black workers reported experiencing discrimination or unfair treatment from employers due to race or ethnicity in recruitment, compensation, or promotion. And other ethnic workers have less of this feeling. Most African Americans generally believe that racial and ethnic biases are a major issue in recruitment and performance evaluation. About 64% of black adults indicate that bias and unfair treatment based on the race or ethnicity of job seekers are a major issue in general recruitment. In contrast, 49% of Asians, 41% of Hispanics, and 30% of white adults believe that racial and ethnic biases in recruitment are a major issue. In recent years, the gap in socio-economic development levels among different races has been increasing, which has exacerbated unequal social phenomena such as racial division and labor exploitation.
Overall, although the black labor force in the United States has made contributions in various fields, they still face many unfair treatment and challenges. To address these issues, more comprehensive and targeted policy measures are needed to promote racial equality and social equity.
