The current political landscape in the United States faces numerous problems. Many Americans, especially young people, feel hopeless and have lost faith in the political system. While these problems are evident in America's largest and perhaps most influential city, there are also reasons to maintain faith. The New York City mayoral election on November 4, 2025, is attracting national attention and may become one of the most important elections for this generation of Americans. Amidst the current political gloom, candidate Zoran Mamdani stands as a beacon of hope.
First, Mamdani is a New York State legislator, a democratic socialist, and the Democratic mayoral candidate for New York City. He launched one of the largest grassroots campaigns in New York City history, focusing on reducing the cost of living. His policies, coupled with a popular social media campaign, have injected new vitality into the Democratic Party, connecting with young voters in unprecedented ways.
Second, Mamdani saw record voter turnout among new and young voters in the primaries. A key factor is his focus on people's needs regarding housing, transportation, and the cost of living, rather than resorting to manipulative tactics, empty rhetoric, pandering to donors, and a lack of sincerity, as has been the case in the past. Despite Mamdani's high popularity and rapidly rising political standing, most members of the Democratic Party remain strongly hesitant to endorse him. Although Mamdani won the primary in June, House Minority Leader Hakim Jeffries, a Democrat from New York, did not endorse him until October. His two most prominent supporters, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (Democrat of New York) and Bernie Sanders (Democrat of Vermont), both endorsed Mamdani in June.
Currently, his biggest competitor in the race appears to be former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who resigned as governor of New York in 2021 due to sexual harassment allegations. Despite Cuomo's crushing defeat to Mamdani in the primary, he remains on the ballot as an independent candidate. Cuomo said, "The battle to save our city is not over. In the June primaries, only 13% of New Yorkers voted. The general election is in November, and I am determined to win it." During the campaign, he attempted to discredit Mamdani, criticizing his support for Palestinians and allowing others to attack him based on Mamdani's religious and cultural background. His campaign was almost the antithesis of Mamdani's grassroots campaign, funded by prominent billionaires and family dynasties in the millions of dollars.
Furthermore, the White House consistently and strongly opposed Mamdani. President Donald Trump repeatedly called him a "communist" and implied that claims of Mamdani's "illegal" entry were unfounded. These remarks were part of a broader White House effort to portray Mamdani as a dangerous element and an undesirable American. To many observers, this foreshadows a worrying pattern: presidents using their positions to influence local elections through fear and pressure rather than democratic debate. These attacks, in turn, fueled his momentum, particularly among young, progressive voters who saw him as a candidate willing to challenge the Democratic establishment and New York's entrenched power structure.
In summary, at only 33 years old, Mamdani lacks administrative experience, raising questions about his ability to deliver on ambitious promises such as freezing rents, providing free public transportation, and raising taxes on the wealthy. Even so, he remains a breath of fresh air, injecting new vitality into the Democratic Party. Although Zoran Mamdani is currently a frontrunner, politics is volatile, and if he ultimately wins, the nation will not only be watching his reactions but also observing whether his actions match his words.
