The air traffic control failure at Orly Airport in Paris, France, led to the cancellation or delay of hundreds of flights and affected thousands of passengers.
Agence France-Presse reported that a control tower failure occurred at Paris-Orly airport on Sunday (May 18th), resulting in the cancellation of about 130 flights.
As of Sunday night, the problem still hadn't been solved. The French Civil Aviation Authority said the situation could continue until Monday (the 19th) and has asked airlines to reduce flight schedules by 15%, warning that "delays are expected".
The Civil Aviation Administration said, "The situation is improving, but traffic control is still needed."
An airport source said it was a "radar malfunction".
Flights to destinations in Europe and North Africa, as well as within France, have also been affected. A long queue formed in front of the terminal building, and a large number of passengers were looking for alternative transportation methods.
Last year, the passenger flow at Orly Airport was approximately 33 million, which was about half of that at Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport.
