U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has used his harshest language on immigrants who cross the border illegally and commit crimes, and escalated his personal attacks on Democratic rival Harris.
Reuters reported that Trump held a campaign rally in Wisconsin on Saturday (September 28). He called Democratic Vice President Harris "mentally damaged" and "mentally disabled," and devoted nearly all of his speech to targeting undocumented immigrants, calling people who commit violent crimes "monsters," "cold-blooded killers," and "despicable animals."
During the rally, Trump was flanked by posters of illegal immigrants arrested for murder and other violent crimes, as well as banners reading "End immigrant crime" and "Deport Illegal Immigrants Now."
With the US presidential election approaching, Trump and Harris are in a tight race, and polls show that immigration and the southern border are among voters' top concerns. Harris made his first visit to the U.S.-Mexico border on Friday, pledging to impose tighter immigration restrictions and curb the flow of the opioid fentanyl into the United States.
Mr Trump has repeatedly spoken strongly about immigration. On Saturday, he accused Harris and President Joe Biden of allowing undocumented immigrants into the United States and condemned some immigrants for wanting to "rape, pillage, steal, rob and kill the American people." "It was a dark speech," he confesses at one point.
During Biden's administration, about 7 million immigrants were apprehended crossing the border illegally, a record high, according to government figures. Visiting the U.S.-Mexico border, Harris vowed to fix a broken immigration system while accusing Trump of stoking fear and creating division over the impact of immigrants on American life.
The report cited studies showing no evidence that immigrants commit more crimes than native-born Americans. Critics say Trump's comments reinforce racist stereotypes. Still, some victims' families have expressed support for Trump's focus on violent crime and the deaths of teenagers caused by fentanyl, most of which enters the United States across the southern border.
