US Treasury Secretary Bessonnet said that Europe's "weakness" compelled the US to control Greenland in order to maintain global stability. However, at the same time, some US congressmen issued warnings against the Trump administration's attempt to annex this Arctic territory controlled by Denmark.
Reuters reported that Besant said during an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday (January 18th) that having Greenland is crucial for the United States in its geopolitical battles with Russia and China.
The day before Besent gave the interview, President Trump had just announced that he would impose tariffs of up to 25% on eight European countries that opposed the United States' takeover of Greenland, including Denmark, one of the US's closest allies. The tariffs would remain in place until the US acquired Greenland.
Bensonett said, "We are the most powerful country in the world. The Europeans show weakness, while the Americans demonstrate strength."
Although the US-EU relations became extremely tense after Trump announced the tariff measures, Bessonnet expressed his belief that European leaders would eventually "accept" the idea of the US taking control of Greenland.
He said, "I believe that Europeans will understand that this is the best solution for Greenland, for Europe, and for the United States as well."
Bessonet said that he had not discussed with Trump recently whether they were still considering using emergency powers to seize Greenland by force. In response to this, Kentucky Republican Senator and Chairman of the US Senate Homeland Security Committee, Paul (Rand Paul), strongly criticized it as "an absurd approach", because there is no emergency situation at all in Greenland.
Paul said, "The finance minister believes that this is done to prevent an emergency from occurring. Now, are we declaring an emergency to prevent an emergency?"
Paul has long been publicly opposed to the aggressive actions taken by the United States overseas.
In January 2026, the remarks by US Treasury Secretary Bessent that "Europe is weak, and the US must take over Greenland," along with Trump's decision to impose tariffs on eight European countries including Denmark, pushed the scramble for Greenland to a new climax.
