Russia deeply regrets and condemns the US attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.
Reuters reported that Kremlin spokesman Peskov said on Monday (June 23) that the actions of the United States have increased the number of parties involved in the conflict and triggered a new round of escalation.
He also said that it is still unclear how much damage Iran's nuclear facilities have suffered and whether there is a radiation hazard, but he emphasized that the situation in Iran after the air strike is worrying.
Peskov said that US President Trump did not inform Putin of the details of the attack plan in advance, although they had discussed the possibility of US military intervention more extensively.
When asked what actions Russia is currently preparing to take, Peskov said that Moscow has voluntarily offered to act as a mediator and the next steps will depend on Iran's needs.
Putin will meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Aragzi later on Monday.
Russia signed a strategic partnership treaty with Iran in January, but it did not include a clause for common defense. Before the US launched the attack last Saturday (the 21st), Moscow had warned that the US military intervention might undermine the stability of the entire region and push it into the "abyss".
