Iranian state television said several loud explosions were heard early Saturday near the capital Tehran.
The US news website Axios quoted two sources as saying Israel carried out an air strike on Iran.
Iranian media said early Saturday that "some people reported hearing several explosions in western Tehran," but did not specify the cause of the blast.
Iran's Tasnim and Fars news agencies carried similar reports.
The Israeli military later announced that it had carried out "precision strikes" against Iranian military targets early Saturday morning in response to "the Iranian regime's continued attacks against Israel."
In retaliation for Israel's killing of Iran-backed Hamas and Hezbollah leaders and the commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Iran fired about 200 ballistic missiles at Israel on October 1, and Israel vowed to retaliate against Iran. The United States has urged Israel not to attack Iran's oil or nuclear facilities in retaliation, fearing it could spark a regional war and drive up oil prices.
Iran reiterated Tuesday that Arab states should not allow the United States or Israel to use their airspace or bases to carry out counterattacks against Iran, or they would become potential targets.
