A member of the National Security Council of the Iranian Parliament said that if European countries invoke the UN mechanism to impose international sanctions on Iran again, Iran may refuse to fulfill its security commitments.
According to Iran's Borna News Agency, Muqtada, a member of the National Security Council of the Iranian parliament, said on Monday (July 21) when talking about the possible countermeasures Tehran might take against the re-imposition of international sanctions: "We have multiple means." We can refuse to fulfill our security commitments to this region, the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and other sea areas.
He said that Europe itself is engaged in political, economic and cultural conflicts with Russia, China and even the United States, and therefore cannot take risks in the Strait of Hormuz.
Mukhtadai made the remarks ahead of talks between Iran's deputy foreign minister and British, French and German diplomats in Istanbul, Turkey on Friday (the 25th).
These three European countries have pointed out that if Iran does not engage in productive negotiations with Western powers, especially the United States, on its nuclear program, they will resume international sanctions against Iran by the end of August.
In recent months, European countries and Iran have held fruitless talks on Tehran's nuclear program. Meanwhile, indirect nuclear talks are also taking place between Tehran and Washington. Israel's attack on Iran in June led to the suspension of such negotiations.
Last week, a spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry said that if the three European countries invoked the UN's "rapid resumption of sanctions" mechanism, Tehran would respond. This mechanism will expire on October 18th.
Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi wrote to the UN Secretary-General on Sunday (the 20th), stating that the three European countries lack the legal status to invoke the above-mentioned mechanism and arguing that their positions on the attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities by Israel and the United States last month have made them no longer participants in the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.
