After the government building in the Ukrainian capital was hit by Russian artillery fire for the first time, US President Trump said he was ready to impose the second phase of sanctions on Russia.
Reuters reported that a White House reporter asked Trump on Sunday (September 7) whether he was prepared to launch the second phase of sanctions against Russia, and Trump said, "Yes." This is Trump's clearest statement to date, but he did not elaborate.
Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose further sanctions on Russia before, but he, who has long hoped to facilitate peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, has been slow to take action.
The White House did not immediately respond to an email inquiry by Trump about what sanctions he was considering.
From the evening of September 6th to the early morning of September 7th, Russia launched the largest-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war. The Cabinet building in the center of Kyiv was also hit, with thick smoke billowing from its roof.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that drone and missile attacks have killed four people and caused damage in northern, southern and eastern Ukraine, including cities such as Zaporizhzhia, Kryvorog and Odessa, as well as regions like Sumy and Chernihiv.
The Ukrainian Air Force said that Russia had launched 805 drones and 13 missiles into Ukraine. The Ukrainian state emergency service said that the night attack caused fires in many places in Kyiv, injuring 18 people.
Last month, Trump imposed punitive tariffs on Indian imports on the grounds that India continued to purchase Russian crude oil.
