(Jerusalem) Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid arrived in Somaliland on Tuesday (January 6), marking the first visit by a high-ranking Israeli official since Israel recognized Somaliland.
A statement from the Somaliland presidential office said that the delegation led by Foreign Minister Lapid arrived in the capital Hargeisa and was greeted at the airport by senior Somaliland officials. Lapid held meetings with high-ranking Somaliland officials.
Israel officially recognized Somaliland as an independent sovereign state on December 26 last year, becoming the first country to recognize the Republic of Somaliland.
Somaliland is a breakaway region of Somalia that declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and established its own government, army, and currency. However, prior to Israel's announcement, it had not received diplomatic recognition from any sovereign state.
Several countries, including Somalia, the African Union, Egypt, and Turkey, have condemned Israel's decision.
