The American Bar Association has filed a lawsuit in a federal court in Washington, D.C., demanding to prevent the Trump administration's "intimidation campaign" against large law firms.
The American Bar Association pointed out that the Trump administration, through a series of executive orders, "intimidated and coerced law firms and lawyers not to challenge the president or his administration in court", violated the US Constitution.
Xinhua News Agency quoted a statement by the association's president, William Bay, saying: "The American Bar Association has never been more in urgent need of defending its members, the profession and the rule of law itself."
The lawsuit filed by the Bar Association on Monday (June 16th) has intensified the confrontation between the American Bar Association and the Trump administration. The Trump administration has cut some of its financial support for the association and attempted to limit its role in the review process of federal judge nominations.
Previously, the Trump administration issued an executive order to revoke the security permits of some law firms and terminate their contracts with the federal government. Four law firms have successively filed lawsuits on this matter, and another nine law firms have reached settlements with the government, promising to provide free legal services to avoid penalties.
The American Bar Association is the largest bar organization in the United States, with approximately 400,000 members.
