Just two years ago, Google seemed to be in a very difficult position. In an effort to catch up with the suddenly popular OpenAI chatbot ChatGPT, the search giant hastily launched its still-developing AI system on the Google.com homepage. The result was a series of embarrassing mishaps, such as suggesting people eat stones for nutrition or putting glue on pizza. These awkward mistakes led to questions: Was this company, which once dominated the internet, being disrupted by emerging AI forces?
However, today, the consensus in Silicon Valley has quietly shifted. More and more people believe that Google has not only successfully stabilized its position and caught up, but is also very likely to ultimately win this AI race. This once again proves how rapidly changes can occur in the tech industry, completely reversing the situation in just over a year.
At the recent Google I/O software developer conference, Google presented impressive data: the number of regular users of their chatbot Gemini has more than doubled in just one year, now reaching 900 million. This figure is roughly on par with OpenAI's own reported number of active ChatGPT users, and almost 30 times the network traffic of another AI company, Claude. More importantly, while OpenAI and Anthropic are still losing money on expensive AI data center operations, Google has already found a way to use artificial intelligence to support its core business. Last quarter, Google's advertising revenue grew by 16% to $77 billion. AI technology helps marketers gain a deeper understanding of user interests, significantly improving advertising effectiveness and revenue.
Gemini's influence extends far beyond a standalone chat tool. It will soon become an important part of Apple's iPhone. In January of this year, Google and Apple announced a collaboration, with Gemini serving as the underlying AI technology for future versions of Apple's voice assistant, Siri. Considering Gemini is already built into Android devices, this means that almost every smartphone in the world may have access to Google's AI capabilities.
At this I/O conference, Google also showcased more practical application scenarios. For example, AI can help online retailers boost sales by automatically pushing promotional information to customers through smart shopping carts; users can easily have Gemini draft speeches in Google Docs, adding personal stories and humor; Gemini can also directly access Google flight and hotel data, becoming an excellent travel planning assistant. It is gradually integrating into various tools people use daily.
Google's success hinges on not treating Gemini as an isolated chat product, but systematically integrating it into all of the company's core products. Different teams are responsible for embedding AI into Gmail, Google Maps, Search, and the standalone Gemini app. This comprehensive integration strategy allows users to access and use AI unconsciously, significantly increasing actual adoption rates.
At the same time, Google fully leverages its unique advantages—its vast user reach and mature product ecosystem. Consumer technology analysts point out that while the excellence of the AI model itself is important, its "location" is even more crucial: can users easily discover it, use it, and derive real value from it? Google places AI-generated answers directly in the most prominent position on the homepage of Google.com, the world's most visited website. Although there were obvious errors in the early stages, the company quickly optimized it, and the accuracy rate is now quite high. In contrast, Microsoft faced a similar crisis 15 years ago. The rise of Apple's iPhone and Google's Android severely impacted Windows' dominance. Despite launching Windows Phone and acquiring Nokia at a high price, Microsoft ultimately lost its leading position in the consumer market during the mobile era. Google, however, did not repeat this mistake; it successfully reinvented itself through AI.
From a struggling catch-up two years ago to a complete reversal today, Google's AI story is not only a technological turnaround but also a vivid example of adaptability and execution. In the rapidly changing era of artificial intelligence, truly powerful companies are often those that know how to combine new technologies with their deep-rooted expertise.
