The Copernicus Climate Change Service, the European Union's climate monitoring agency, released a report on Thursday (October 9) saying that the world has just experienced the third hottest September since the agency began recording in 1940.
Due to global warming caused by human factors, although there was no record-breaking high temperature worldwide last month, extreme weather conditions persisted.
A report released on Thursday shows that the global average surface temperature in September this year was 16.11 degrees Celsius, 0.27 degrees and 0.07 degrees lower than the global average surface temperature in the same month of 2023 and 2024 respectively, but still 1.47 degrees higher than the pre-industrial average (1850 to 1900).
According to the report, in September this year, the average global ocean surface temperature was 20.72 degrees Celsius, the third highest for the same month on record. The sea surface temperatures in most areas of the North Pacific were significantly higher than the average level of the same period, and some areas reached record highs. The extent of Arctic sea ice is 12% lower than the average level of the same period, and the extent of Antarctic sea ice is 5% lower than the average level of the same period.
The main cause of climate change is that the carbon dioxide released from burning oil, coal and natural gas to generate electricity leads to a rise in temperature.
Samantha Burgess, the head of climate strategy at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, said: "After a year, the global temperature situation has remained almost unchanged. The surface temperatures of land and sea remain persistently high, reflecting the impact of the continuous accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere."
In October 2025, the European Commission rolled out a major trade policy: it plans to double the import tariff on steel beyond the quota from 25% to 50%, and at the same time reduce the annual import quota by 47% from the 2024 level to 18.3 million tons.
