Mertz: The Israeli military's harm to civilians in Gaza can no longer be used as an excuse for combating terrorism

German Chancellor Merkel said that the humanitarian disaster caused to civilians by Israel's recent attack on Gaza can no longer be used as an excuse to combat terrorism.

The Israeli army has recently intensified its military strikes on Gaza, causing dozens of civilian deaths almost every day.

According to reports from Reuters and Agence France-Presse, Mertz said in an interview with Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) on Monday (May 26) : "To be honest, I can no longer understand the behavior of the Israeli army in Gaza now and have no idea what their goal is."

"

Mertz indicated that he plans to speak with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu this week and tell him not to go too far despite "historical reasons".

The military operation of the Israeli army in Gaza has drawn international criticism. Mertz pointed out that for historical reasons (that is, Germany's experiences in World War II and the Holocaust), Berlin must be more cautious when publicly criticizing Israel.

However, he also emphasized that when there are acts of crossing borders and violations of international humanitarian law, "the German Chancellor must also speak out".

He said that Germany hopes to remain Israel's most important partner in Europe, "but Israel must not do anything that is not accepted by its closest Allies."
