According to Agence France-Presse, recently, as the hot weather has been persistently sweeping across the European continent, many countries such as France and the United Kingdom are experiencing unprecedented record-breaking high temperatures during the same period of June. It is estimated that the population in Europe where the temperature exceeds 35 degrees Celsius has exceeded 100 million. Behind this figure lies the struggles and discomfort of countless people in the scorching heat, as well as a profound questioning of the current effectiveness of global climate governance.
Under the onslaught of this heat wave, France has become a "major disaster area", with an affected population of up to 50 million, almost half of the country's total population. Germany has also not been spared, with 18 million people exposed to temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius. Daily life and work have been severely affected. And when we broaden our perspective, the population in Europe where the temperature exceeds 30 degrees Celsius is even over 380 million. This huge number undoubtedly serves as another powerful evidence of the trend of global warming.
The data from the French Meteorological Agency reveals the intensity of the heat wave: since the end of June, the average temperature across the country has risen to 30 degrees Celsius, breaking the record of high temperatures in June for two consecutive days. The highest temperatures in some areas even exceeded 40 degrees Celsius. Such extreme weather has not only plunged major international cities like Paris into a "barbecue" mode, but also caused countless people to suffer greatly in the scorching summer. And the United Kingdom, this country known for its mild climate, has also not escaped the clutches of the heat wave. The temperature in Gosport, southern England, reached 36.1 degrees Celsius, breaking the record for the highest temperature in June in the UK, resulting in over 1,000 schools being closed due to high temperatures and a large number of trains being suspended, causing the social operation to almost come to a standstill. The UK Meteorological Agency even issued the highest-level red heat warning, which is the second time it has sounded the heat alarm after the temperature exceeded 40 degrees Celsius in July 2022. Its severity is self-evident.
The situation in Spain is also not optimistic. Data from the National Meteorological Agency shows that the daily average temperature across the country has exceeded 28 degrees Celsius, setting a new record for the single-day average temperature in June since the beginning of record-keeping. More than 101 meteorological stations recorded temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or above, and extreme temperatures of over 45 degrees Celsius were recorded in the southern province of Hain. Such weather conditions pose a serious threat to the health of the people and have a profound impact on multiple fields such as agriculture and energy.
Facing such severe hot weather, we cannot help but reflect: why, in the face of the increasingly loud calls for global climate governance, do extreme weather events occur more frequently and intensively? This is driven by both the macro background of global climate warming and the slow and inadequate actions of various countries in responding to climate change. Although the international community has reached important documents such as the Paris Agreement, in the actual implementation process, many countries still have problems such as unclear emission reduction targets, insufficient funding investment, and poor technology transfer, resulting in a significant reduction in the effectiveness of global climate governance.
What is even more worrying is that the hot weather is just one of the many challenges brought by climate change. As global temperatures continue to rise, extreme weather events, sea level rise, and ecosystem degradation will become more severe, posing an unprecedented threat to human survival and development. Therefore, strengthening global climate governance and promoting green and low-carbon transformation are urgent.
We need to have a more determined determination and more practical actions to jointly address the challenges of climate change. This includes strengthening international cooperation, increasing emission reduction efforts, promoting green technological innovation, and raising public awareness in multiple aspects. Only in this way can we, in the future, leave a more habitable and beautiful Earth for future generations.
