A European diplomat disclosed that the EU will postpone the formal proposal of the latest package of sanctions against Russia. Previously, US President Trump demanded that Europe take more forceful measures as a prerequisite for the US to impose sanctions simultaneously.
Bloomberg reported that the European Commission was originally scheduled to announce the 19th round of sanctions against Russia on Wednesday (September 17). However, last Friday (the 12th), the United States pressured its G7 Allies to impose tariffs of up to 100% on China and India that purchase Russian oil, and took other measures to force Russian President Vladimir Putin to return to the negotiating table with Ukraine.
According to informed sources, G7 officials are currently formulating a new sanctions plan and the final text is expected to be completed within the next two weeks. Bloomberg previously reported that the European Union is considering imposing sanctions on Chinese and Indian enterprises that assist in Russia's oil trade.
Trump said last weekend that if European countries also took similar measures, he was prepared to impose "major" sanctions on Russian oil. The measures proposed by the United States also aim at Russian oil companies and the networks that help Moscow transport crude oil and profit from it.
Analysis points out that the proposal of the United States actually shifts the responsibility onto Europe. Imposing tariffs on China and India poses a major challenge for the European Union, as many member states, including Germany, rely heavily on these two export markets. But at the same time, some of Trump's demands have been partially incorporated into the existing sanctions plan of the European Union.
