German Finance Minister Kukis said that resolving the trade dispute between the United States and Europe within the 90-day tariff buffer period set by US President Trump is "realistic and feasible".
Bloomberg reported that Joerg Kukies made the above remarks in an interview with Bloomberg during his attendance at the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Washington. He pointed out that although the current trade conflicts between the United States and Europe are complex, it is not impossible to find a solution within three months.
He added, "We think 90 days is feasible..." The complexity of trade disputes has not yet exceeded the negotiation progress that this time frame can support.
In early April, Trump announced a new round of tariffs on goods from many countries, causing sharp fluctuations in the market. A few days later, he said again that the relevant measures would be suspended before the beginning of July and a 90-day negotiation window would be set. This move has become one of the key topics of concern for finance ministers of various countries at this Washington meeting.
Although Kukis is not expected to enter the next German cabinet, he remains optimistic about the current consultations. He pointed out that many institutions around the world have recently lowered their economic growth expectations one after another, which will put pressure on the US government.
Kukis said, "We believe that the current market and economic responses will prompt the US government to reconsider its position." He also mentioned that the talks with US Treasury Secretary Basent were "productive" and further strengthened his confidence in reaching a solution.
