The Nobel Peace Prize winner from Iran, Mohammadi, whose health condition "has been deteriorating day by day" after completing an almost-week-long hunger strike protest, has now been sentenced to a new prison term by the authorities.
AFP reported that Narges Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023. Previously, she was imprisoned for two months for publicly opposing the government at a funeral in December last year.
Her foundation stated in a statement that she was sentenced to six years in prison on Saturday (February 7th) for endangering national security; in addition, she was also sentenced to one and a half years in prison for "publicly" opposing the Islamic system in Iran.
The statement said that after being brought before the judge and swiftly sentenced, Mohammedi did not offer any defense or make any statement, thereby demonstrating her contempt.
Her husband Rahmani, who is in Paris, said in a statement: "Nargis did not offer any defense. She firmly believes that the judicial authorities have no legitimacy. She thinks these trials are just a predestined farce."
Her Iranian lawyer, Nili, confirmed the details of the verdict in Tehran to AFP and said she would be exiled to the city of Hosf in the eastern province of South Khurasan for another two years.
Mouhammadi began a hunger strike on February 2nd to protest against her detention conditions and the inability to communicate with her lawyer and family.
The foundation said: "Nargis Mohammadi ended her six-day hunger strike today, but there are reports suggesting that her physical condition is cause for concern."
Mouhammadi told Nili that she was sent to the hospital three days ago due to a deteriorating health condition.
The foundation said: "However, before she completed her treatment, she was sent back to the Iranian Intelligence Department's security detention center in Mashhad."
"Continuing to detain her endangers her life and violates human rights laws."
Over the past 25 years, the 53-year-old Mohammadi has been repeatedly tried and imprisoned for publicly opposing the use of the death penalty in Iran and the mandatory dress codes for women.
