A large-scale campus kidnapping occurred in Nigeria recently. More than 300 teachers and students were kidnapped by armed men, among whom 50 managed to escape successfully.

The AFP reported that the Christian Council of Nigeria issued a statement on Sunday (November 23) saying: "We have received some good news. 50 students have successfully escaped and been reunited with their parents."

The statement added that the children escaped between Friday and Saturday.

It was reported that a school kidnapping incident occurred in the central Niger state early Friday morning (the 21st). The association said that after verification, "the total number of kidnapped victims at present is 303 students and 12 teachers." The number of kidnapped students accounted for almost half of the 629 registered students at the school.

The statement said that suspected terrorists broke into St. Mary's school, a Catholic school in the Aguala region of Niger State, and kidnapped and took away the teachers and students.

Pope Leo XIV also called for the immediate release of the kidnapped teachers and students on Sunday. I learned with deep sorrow the news that clergy, believers and students in Nigeria and Cameroon had been kidnapped. I sincerely appeal for the immediate release of the hostages."

Previously, on Monday (the 17th), militants broke into a government boarding school in the neighboring state of Kebbi, kidnapped 25 girls and took them to an unknown location.

In response to the crisis, the government of Niger State closed many schools and President Bora Tinoub cancelled his plans to attend several international events, including the G20 Summit held in Johannesburg.
