Us Vice President Vance said that the United States is making efforts to arrange a trilateral meeting among the United States, Russia and Ukraine that includes Ukrainian President Zelensky, but he believes that it is not a good idea for Russian President Putin and Zelensky to meet before the bilateral talks between the leaders of the United States and Russia.
US President Trump and Putin will hold talks in Alaska on Friday (August 15). This will be the first face-to-face meeting between Trump and Putin since Trump returned to the White House in January.
The New York Times reported that Vance said in an interview aired by Fox News on Sunday (the 10th) : "One of the most important obstacles is that Putin has said he will never sit down with Zelensky to talk. The president (Trump) has to break this deadlock."
He said that the White House is working hard to "arrange for the three leaders to sit down and discuss issues such as ending this conflict".
Vance: Unwilling to provide defense funds for Ukraine any longer
In addition, Vance also emphasized that the United States is no longer willing to provide funds for Ukraine to resist Russia.
Vance has long questioned whether the United States is footing the bill for Ukraine's weapons and equipment. He said that the Trump administration no longer wants to provide defense funds for Ukraine, but it is fine for Ukraine to purchase weapons from US companies.
He said, "We no longer want to provide funds for the war in Ukraine." We hope to reach a peaceful solution. We hope to stop the killing. But I think Americans are already tired of continuing to pour their money, and that of American taxpayers, into this conflict.
Vance said, "But if Europeans are willing to pay for weapons from American arms dealers, we won't object." But we won't invest any more."
The leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, the United Kingdom and Finland, along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, issued a joint statement on Saturday (9th) evening, expressing gratitude to Trump for his efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war and demonstrating their readiness to offer assistance through diplomatic channels, including continuing to support Ukraine and impose restrictions on Russia.
The statement said: "We all agree that a diplomatic solution must protect the critical security interests of Ukraine and Europe." This includes the need for reliable security guarantees to enable Ukraine to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The statement also emphasized: "The path to peace for Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine's participation."
Zelensky posted on social media platform X on Sunday (the 10th) that Kyiv "values and fully supports" the joint statement issued by European leaders on achieving peace in Ukraine while safeguarding the interests of both Ukraine and Europe. He emphasized: "The end of the war must be fair."
Two days ago, Trump hinted that the agreement to end the Russia-Ukraine war might involve land swaps, but did not disclose the details.
