A court in Paris, France, ruled that former President Sarkozy could be granted bail during his appeal against the conspiracy to commit treason in September. Sarkozy was released from prison on Monday (November 10th).
According to BFMTV, an affiliate of CNN, 70-year-old Sarkozy attended a court hearing via video link on Monday. He said that the 20 days in prison were "a nightmare".
Sarkozy was sentenced to five years in prison by the Paris Criminal Court for allegedly illegally accepting campaign funding from former Libyan leader Gadhafi in 2005. He was escorted by the police to La Sante Prison in Paris on October 21st to serve his sentence, becoming the first former head of state of an EU member state to be imprisoned.
French prosecutors have demanded that Sarkozy be released under judicial supervision and that the range of people he can reach be restricted.
The court also clearly stipulated that Sarkozy was not allowed to contact the people involved in the case or the current Minister of Justice, Dalmanin.
Dalmanin visited Sarkozy in prison in October to discuss his security arrangements, a move that raised public doubts. About 30 lawyers have filed a lawsuit against Dalmanin, accusing him of secretly supporting Sarkozy.
