Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu signed an agreement aimed at advancing the construction plan of the "E1 Zone" Jewish settlement in the West Bank, which has drawn international condemnation, and declared that "there will be no Palestinian state".
Xinhua News Agency reported that Netanyahu signed the agreement at a ceremony held in Maal Adumin, a Jewish settlement in the West Bank, on Thursday (September 11). According to the statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office that night, Netanyahu said at the ceremony: "We will keep our promise that there will be no Palestinian state and this land belongs to us."
According to The Times of Israel, Israeli far-right politician and Finance Minister Mottrih told Netanyahu at the same ceremony that Israel will soon celebrate the "annexation of the West Bank".
In mid-August, Smotrikh issued a statement saying that he planned to approve the construction of about 3,400 settlement housing units in the "E1 Zone" between Jerusalem east and Maal Adumin, aiming to "bury the idea of a Palestinian state". Subsequently, the housing construction plan was approved by the Senior Planning Committee of the Civil Affairs Bureau under the Ministry of Defense. Israeli media said that this move would split the West Bank in two and prevent the Palestinian areas of East Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Ramallah from being connected.
The issue of Jewish settlements is one of the main obstacles to the peace talks between Israel and Palestine. Israel occupied East Jerusalem and parts of the West Bank during the Third Middle East War in 1967 and built Jewish settlements, which aroused strong opposition from the Palestinian side. The population data report released by the Israeli government at the end of last year shows that about 510,000 Israelis live in Jewish settlements built in violation of international law in the West Bank.
Since late July, countries such as France, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia have successively expressed their plans or preparations to recognize the State of Palestine. The call from the international community for the implementation of the "two-state solution" has further strengthened.
