UN sanctions against Iran resumed effect on Saturday evening (September 27) as the last nuclear talks with Western powers failed to achieve a breakthrough.
AFP reported that European and US diplomats immediately emphasized after the sanctions were reinstated that diplomatic efforts were not over yet.
Us Secretary of State Rubio urged Tehran to "accept direct dialogue held in good faith." He also called on UN member states to immediately enforce sanctions in order to "force the Iranian leader to make the right choice that is most beneficial to the country's and global security."
The foreign ministers of the UK, France and Germany said in a joint statement that they would continue to seek "new diplomatic solutions to ensure that Iran will never possess nuclear weapons". They also called on Tehran to "avoid taking any escalation actions".
Iran has allowed UN inspectors to return to its nuclear facilities. President Pezehizyan said that the United States only proposed a three-month "moratorium on sanctions" on the condition that Iran hand over all of its enriched uranium stockpile, but he could not accept this proposal.
Russia and China attempted to postpone sanctions until April next year at the Security Council on Friday (26th), but did not receive enough votes. The sanctions came into effect on Sunday Greenwich Mean Time, which is 8 a.m. Singapore time on Sunday.
German Foreign Minister Wadford said that Germany, along with the UK and France, has no "option" to launch sanctions because Iran has failed to fulfill its obligations.
He said at the United Nations General Assembly: "For us, Iran must never obtain nuclear weapons."
But I would like to stress: We are still willing to negotiate the new agreement. Diplomacy can and should continue.
Russia has made it clear that it will not enforce sanctions, considering them ineffective.
Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said that these sanctions "ultimately exposed the West's policy of undermining the pursuit of a constructive solution in the UN Security Council, as well as its intention to unilaterally demand concessions from Tehran through blackmail and pressure."
Iran has long insisted on not seeking nuclear weapons.
