US President Trump intensified his attacks on California Governor Newsom, publicly declaring that he would arrest him on the grounds of improper handling of the Los Angeles riots.
Trump made the above remarks on Monday (June 9) when asked by reporters about the back-and-forth between Newsom and White House Border Affairs Director Horman. Homan once threatened to arrest anyone who obstructed immigration law enforcement, including Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Bass.
Although Homan said neither of them had "crossed the line", Newsom responded in an interview with NBC News on Sunday afternoon (the 8th) that the presidential adviser should stop bluffing and ask the other party to "just get it done right away". He shouted, "Come and catch me! Am I still afraid of this from him?" This cannot stop me from speaking up for California.
Bloomberg quoted Trump's remarks after returning to the White House from Camp David as saying, "If I were Tom (Horman), I would do this." I think this is very good... Gavin (Newsom) likes to show off, but I think that would be a good thing. He did a really bad job. Actually - I do like Gavin Newsom. He's a good man, but he's too incompetent. Everyone on Earth knows that.
After protests against the surprise arrest of illegal immigrants broke out in Los Angeles for several consecutive days, Trump ordered the deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles over the weekend. Earlier on Monday, Newsom stated that he would file a lawsuit to prevent the Trump administration from sending troops to the local area through legal means.
Newsom said that Trump threatened to arrest him
Xinhua News Agency quoted Newsom's post on social media on Monday morning as saying that the US President actually threatened to arrest him, and such behavior was an "unbreachable bottom line" for the United States.
Newsom reposted the video footage of Trump's interview with the media earlier that day and wrote: "The US President has just publicly talked about arresting a sitting governor. I really hope the United States will never see such a day." Whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, this is the bottom line that our country cannot cross.
On Sunday, protesters continued to have large-scale clashes with the National Guard dispatched by the Trump administration to Los Angeles, law enforcement officers from federal agencies and local police. Trump administration border Affairs Director Horman said at noon on Sunday that the crackdown on illegal immigrants in the Southern California area will continue and "any obstructors" will be arrested, including Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Buss.
Since the continuous conflicts between Los Angeles community residents and US federal agency law enforcement officers last Friday (the 6th), Trump and Newsom have been engaged in a "war of words". The former criticized the latter for being "incompetent" and unable to control the chaotic situation, while the latter attacked the former for creating "a crisis" and "adding fuel to the fire" to gain political benefits.
