(Rome/London) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday (April 26) after meeting with US President Donald Trump in the Vatican that there is hope for a "reliable and lasting peace".
Zelensky posted on social media platform X: "We had a one-on-one discussion." It is hoped that all the discussions can achieve results. This is a highly symbolic meeting. If we can achieve common results, it has the potential to become a historic meeting.
The two leaders held a 15-minute meeting before the funeral of Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic Church. Trump is vigorously demanding that Russia and Ukraine reach a peace agreement to end the longest conflict in Europe since World War II. The White House said that Trump and Zelensky had a "productive discussion".
Zelensky also met separately with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Emmanuel Stammer in Rome.
The British government said on Saturday that Prime Minister Stammer and Zelensky discussed the progress of negotiations to end the Russia-Ukraine war. The two leaders discussed the positive progress made recently "in ensuring a just and lasting peace in Ukraine."
The statement also said that Stammer and Zelensky agreed that the momentum of the talks should be maintained and that close cooperation with international partners should continue to advance the next stage of negotiations.
