Germany plans to invest 26.5 billion euros in the next decade or so to purchase new military uniforms and personal equipment for its soldiers, as well as new military vehicles.
The first 19 billion euros of expenditure will be distributed until 2034 for the purchase of a new generation of military uniforms named FASER. The German government aims to significantly increase the size of its military from the current 280,000 to 460,000 by the mid-2030s.
As for the second expenditure of 7.5 billion euros, it will be distributed over 2037. The planned military vehicles to be purchased may be 3,000 to 5,000 Boxer military vehicles jointly developed by the German Rheinmetall company and the French-German joint defense company KNDS.
German Chancellor Merz earlier received support from the parliament to expand defense spending without being subject to the government debt ceiling, in order to strengthen the military and shoulder greater responsibilities for European security.
Germany's defense spending in 2026, including special funds, is estimated to reach 117.2 billion euros, representing 2.8% of its gross domestic product (GDP).
