Calm was restored in Suweida Province in southern Syria on Sunday (July 20), according to observers and AFP reporters. A week earlier, sectarian violence broke out between Druze militants and hostile groups, resulting in more than 1,000 deaths.
An AFP reporter in the suburbs of Suveda reported that no conflict was heard on Sunday morning. Government forces have been deployed in parts of the province to implement the ceasefire agreement, and at least one humanitarian convoy is on its way.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that since around midnight, "Suweida has remained cautiously calm", and government security forces have blocked roads to the province to stop tribal militants.
The group said on Sunday that more than 1,000 people have been killed since the violent incidents broke out a week ago, including 336 Druze militants and 298 minority civilians, as well as 342 government security personnel and 21 Sunni Bedouins.
The Syrian Ministry of Interior said that "all tribal militants in Suweida have been evacuated and community conflicts within the city have ceased."
A spokesperson for Syrian tribes and tribal councils told Al Jazeera on Saturday evening (19th) that armed personnel had withdrawn from the city of Suweida "in response to the president's call and the terms of the agreement".
Another medical worker in Suveda told AFP by phone on Sunday: "The situation is completely calm..." We didn't hear of any conflict.
So far, no medical or relief supplies have entered.
The Syrian News Agency released pictures of medical aid supplies ready near the Damascus Ministry of Health and quoted Health Minister Ali as saying that the aid supplies would be sent to the main hospital in Suweida.
There are approximately 150,000 residents in Suveda. The residents are hiding in their homes. There is no water or electricity, and the food supply is also very scarce.
The UN migration agency said that more than 128,000 people in Suveda Province have been displaced due to violent incidents.
