The Israeli military announced on Sunday (October 19) that a ceasefire and the delivery of relief supplies to the Gaza Strip would resume after launching a series of attacks on Hamas targets in the southern Gaza Strip.
Reuters reported that the Israeli military said that on Sunday morning, when Israeli troops were dismantling Hamas military facilities in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah, a group of armed men emerged from tunnels and opened fire on two Israeli excavators. The Israeli side claimed that the attack occurred in the Israeli-controlled area east of the "Yellow Line" and was carried out by Hamas, seriously violating the first phase agreement of the Gaza ceasefire. The attack resulted in two deaths and three injuries among Israeli soldiers. In response, the Israeli military launched air strikes and shelled Hamas military targets in the Rafah area, and then expanded the scope of the strikes.
The Israeli military said that the Hamas targets that attacked the enclave included field commanders, gunners, a tunnel and an Arsenal.
People in the Gaza Strip and health authorities said that the attack on that day killed 26 people in the Gaza Strip, including at least one woman and one child. This attack is the most severe test that the ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States this month has faced so far.
Residents of Gaza said that at least one attack hit a former school in the Nusserat area that houses displaced people.
The Qassan Brigade, an armed wing under Hamas, said it remains committed to abiding by the ceasefire agreement and was unaware of the conflict in Rafah, stating that it has not been in contact with armed groups there since March.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said he has ordered the military to respond forcefully to what he called Hamas' violation of the ceasefire agreement.
