As the United States and Iran are about to resume nuclear negotiations, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu met with US Middle East envoy Witkov in Jerusalem and told him that Iran "cannot keep its promises".
According to reports from Xinhua News Agency and The Jerusalem Post, Netanyahu met Witkov, who arrived in Israel on Tuesday (February 3rd), and the two held a three-hour meeting.
Israeli Defense Minister Katz and Chief of Staff Zamil also attended the meeting.
The Israeli Prime Minister's Office later issued a statement saying that Netanyahu told Witkov: "Iran has repeatedly proven that it cannot keep its promises."
An Israeli senior official disclosed to Israel's Public Broadcasting Corporation (Kan) that the Israeli side has requested the US to guarantee "freedom of action" on the issue of Iran, in order to prevent Iran from taking retaliation after a possible US attack.
The report states that Israel has also demanded that Iran cease the production of ballistic missiles that it considers a direct threat, and terminate its uranium enrichment activities.
The Jerusalem Post learned after Netanyahu's meeting with Witkov that Iran has expressed its willingness to discuss the nuclear issue with the mediators and even considers making compromises. Sources said that Iran also seems willing to discuss the issue of ballistic missiles and the issue of proxies in subsequent negotiations.
Several media outlets predict that Witkof and Iran's Foreign Minister Alaghi will meet on Friday (the 6th) to seek to ease the tensions between the United States and Iran through diplomatic means.
Netanyahu and Witkov also discussed issues related to the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement. Netanyahu stated that before Gaza can start reconstruction, Hamas' armed forces must be disarmed, Gaza must be fully demilitarized, and the war goals set by the Israeli side must be achieved. These are "uncompromising positions" of the Israeli side.
Netanyahu also emphasized that the Palestinian National Authority will not participate in any way in the future governance of Gaza.
