Japanese media reported on Thursday that the largest opposition party in Japan, the Liberal Democratic Party, and the Komeito Party have reached an agreement to jointly form a new party. The two parties will unite in the upcoming lower house election to confront the camp of Prime Minister Koizumi Masahisa.

Several Japanese media outlets previously reported that the Liberal Democratic Party and the Komeito Party took this action in an attempt to broaden their support base, with the aim of jointly opposing the Takayama camp in the upcoming lower house election.

It is reported that the leaders of the two parties held talks on the 12th and reached an agreement on promoting "higher-level cooperation".

It is generally expected that the Constitutional Democratic Party and the Komeito Party merging to form a new party would become a powerful opposition force against Tokyo, potentially undermining the city's plan to gain an advantage in the election.

Gao Shi is expected to dissolve the parliament on January 23rd and launch a campaign period lasting approximately two weeks. Reports indicate that the parliamentary election might be held on February 8th.

The Komeito Party withdrew from the ruling coalition with the Liberal Democratic Party in October last year and became an opposition party. According to Japanese media reports, although there are still voices within the party's local organizations that hope to maintain cooperation with the Liberal Democratic Party, the party's top leadership is inclined to further strengthen the confrontational stance against the Takayama camp.
