The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture has ordered the immediate closure of all poultry farms to prevent the spread of avian influenza.
Reuters reported that the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture issued a statement on Thursday (November 13) saying: "In view of the increased risk of avian influenza entering Spain over the past week, we have taken this measure."
The new order applies to all farms, including organic farms and small-scale producers, to prevent contact with migratory birds that may spread the virus. The authorities also prohibit the co-breeding of ducks and geese with other poultry, the use of untreated surface water, and the holding of poultry trade fairs or exhibitions.
Last week, Spain ordered that poultry in designated high-risk areas must be kept in pens to curb the spread of bird flu.
Previously, the avian influenza epidemic in Europe has been on the rise. Since July, 139 cases have been reported, among which 14 cases were in Spain, half of which were located in the autonomous Community of Castile and Leon.
