President Volodymyr Zelensky told Ukrainian diplomats in a speech Sunday that Ukraine's NATO membership is achievable, but Kiev must work to convince Allies to make it happen.
Reuters reports that Ukraine has repeatedly urged NATO to invite Kiev to become a member. NATO says Ukraine will one day join its ranks, but has yet to set a date or issue an invitation.
Moscow has cited Ukraine's attempt to join NATO as one of the main justifications for its 2022 invasion. Kiev says NATO membership is essential to ensure Russia does not attack again.
Speaking to diplomats at a rally in Kiev, Zelensky said: "We all understand that Ukraine's invitation to join NATO and join NATO can only be a political decision." The union of Ukraine is possible, but it will only be possible if we work on all levels for it."
Zelensky said Allies need to know what Ukraine can bring to NATO and how Ukraine's membership will stabilize global relations.
Last week, Zelensky urged European countries to provide guarantees to protect Ukraine after the war with Russia ends, and Ukraine will eventually need more protection by joining NATO.
