Trudeau announced his resignation, Trump again mentioned Canada's annexation of the United States

Us President-elect Donald Trump called for a US-Canada "merger" after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation, while Joe Biden praised Trudeau as a "staunch friend of the United States."

Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported that after Trudeau announced on Monday (January 6) that he would end his nine-year career as prime minister, Trump posted on Social media Truth Social on Tuesday (7), once again proposing to make Canada the 51st state of the United States.

"Many people in Canada would love to become the 51st state of the United States. The US can no longer afford the massive trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to keep its head above water. Trudeau knows this and has resigned."

"If Canada were to merge with the United States, there would be no tariffs, taxes would go down dramatically, and they (Canadians) would be completely safe from the Russian and Chinese ships that have been surrounding them," he said. Together, what a great country it will be!"

Trump had earlier repeatedly mocked Trudeau for being "the governor of a Canadian state."

Karine Jean-Pierre, a spokeswoman for U.S. President Joe Biden, said Monday: "As close Allies, neighbors, and members of the G-7, we work closely together on all issues facing our two countries and the globe, and Biden thanked Trudeau for his partnership on all of these fronts and for his commitment to defending North America from the geopolitical threats of the 21st century."

Trudeau's resignation means there is little he can do to stop Trump's tariff threat.

"When Trudeau announces his resignation, power and influence will dissipate almost immediately," said Canada's ambassador to the United States, Brian McNaughton.

He also said Trudeau should have acted months ago to ensure the government was ready for Trump's return to the White House. "Now we're going to have months of uncertainty... Trump, meanwhile, is brimming with confidence."

Delgado, a senior program associate at the Wilson Center's Canada Institute in Washington, agreed that the decision to announce his resignation now, amid tensions between Canada and the United States, was puzzling.

Trump has threatened to impose 25 per cent tariffs on Canada and Mexico when he takes office on January 20 until they take action to ban drugs such as fentanyl and curb the flow of undocumented immigrants into the US.

On Nov. 29, Trudeau traveled to Palm Beach, Fla., to have dinner with Trump at Mar-a-Lago to negotiate how to avoid a tariff war. Trump later called the meeting "very productive."
