South Africa has announced that it will not attend the G20 summit to be held in Miami, the United States next year.

Xinhua News Agency reported that South African President's spokesperson Vincent Magwenya posted on social media on Thursday (December 4th) that South Africa will be "temporarily absent" during the United States' tenure as the rotating chair of the Group of 20 (G20) next year until everything returns to normal.

The G20 Summit was held in Johannesburg at the end of November this year. US President Trump did not attend the meeting. The United States took over the G20 presidency from South Africa on Monday (the 1st) until December 1, 2026.

Magvenia said that around this time next year, the UK will take over the G20 rotating presidency, and at that time, South Africa and other countries will have meaningful and substantive contacts on important international issues of common concern.

He wrote in a joking tone, "For now, we will temporarily insert advertisements until normal program broadcasts resume." At the end of the text, there was also a "wry smile" emoji.

Relations between the United States and the South have remained tense since the beginning of this year. The US side cut off aid to South Africa on the grounds that the South African government's land policy constituted racial discrimination against white people, and later expelled the South African ambassador.

Trump posted on social media on November 26 that South Africa would not be invited to the G20 Summit to be held in Miami next year. South African President Ramaphosa said in a national address on November 30 that South Africa will continue to fully participate in G20 affairs with a constructive attitude.
