U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday he would retaliate against Colombia with a full range of measures, including tariffs and sanctions. Earlier, Colombia refused to allow two US military planes carrying deported migrants to land.
The retaliatory measures include a 25 percent "emergency tariff" on all Colombian goods entering the United States, rising to 50 percent within a week; Travel ban and visa revocation of Colombian government officials; As well as emergency fiscal, banking and financial sanctions.
Colombia quickly responded by threatening 50 percent tariffs on U.S. goods. In a post on social media X, President Petro said he directed his trade secretary to increase tariffs on US imports by 25 percent.
Mr. Trump came into office promising to round up and quickly deport foreigners who entered the United States illegally, but Mr. Petro resisted.
Petro said earlier that the deportation of migrants should be carried out using civilian aircraft and handled in a humane manner. "The United States cannot treat Colombian immigrants as criminals," he wrote on X.
Petro later said in a post that he had turned back the US military aircraft. Trump said two American planes were not allowed to land.
Petro also said he was prepared to allow U.S. civilian flights carrying deported immigrants to land as long as those on board were not treated like criminals.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement that the United States "will no longer be cheated or taken advantage of," adding that Petro approved the flights but canceled authorization as the planes took off.
Trump said on the Truth Social that Petro's refusal to take the flight jeopardized U.S. national security. He said he would immediately revoke the visas of Colombian government officials and Petro supporters and impose stricter checks on Colombians at airports.
"These steps are just the beginning. We will not allow the Colombian government to violate its legal obligations to accept the return of the criminals they forced into the United States."
A senior administration official told the BBC that in order to avoid Trump's tariffs and sanctions, the Colombian government has offered to use the presidential plane to arrange for migrants to return home. But the offer was not enough to stop the White House from acting, and negotiations are still ongoing.
