A judge in California ruled that Trump's dispatch of troops to Los Angeles was illegal

A federal judge in California, the United States, ruled that President Trump's deployment of the National Guard and the Marine Corps in the Los Angeles area of California to participate in law enforcement was illegal.

Xinhua News Agency reported that Judge Breel of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California pointed out in his ruling opinion on Tuesday (September 2) that the Trump administration's dispatch of troops to Los Angeles in June to deal with public protests violated the Local Guard Act of 1878. This law prohibits the use of US military forces in domestic law enforcement without the consent of Congress.

Briel ordered that the Trump administration be prohibited from using the California National Guard and other military forces deployed in California to participate in law enforcement. The ruling is set to take effect on September 12th, allowing the Trump administration time to appeal.

California Governor Newsom, a Democrat, welcomed and appreciated the ruling.

A White House spokesperson issued a statement saying, "An irresponsible judge is attempting to usurp the power of the commander-in-chief of the armed forces." Us media reports that the US Department of Justice will promptly file an appeal.

This ruling has drawn much attention from American public opinion as Trump deploys the National Guard to the capital Washington in the name of combating crime and threatens to carry out similar military deployments in more Democratic-dominated cities such as Chicago. Some media pointed out that although the application scope of this ruling is limited to California, it may provide a precedent for clarifying the legal issues involved in the federal government's future deployment of troops in various cities across the United States, which is no less than a setback for the Trump administration.

In early June, personnel from US federal agencies hunting down illegal immigrants repeatedly clashed with the public in the Los Angeles area. Without Newsom requesting support, Trump successively ordered the dispatch of a total of approximately 4,000 California National Guard members and about 700 US Marines to the Los Angeles area to assist federal agencies in carrying out tasks. Although most of these personnel withdrew after July, there are still about 300 National Guard members remaining in Los Angeles at present.
