A spokesperson for the French Foreign Ministry said that France summoned US Ambassador Kushner in response to his criticism of France's anti-Semitic policies. Kushner previously wrote to French President Emmanuel Macron, accusing France of being "inadequate" in curbing anti-Semitic violence.
Reuters reported that Charles Kushner is of Jewish descent and his son Jared is married to Ivanka Trump, the daughter of Donald Trump. Just as relations between France and the United States over the Israel issue were becoming increasingly tense, he publicly published a letter to Macron in The Wall Street Journal.
In the letter, Kushner urged Macron to enforce the laws related to hate crimes more strictly and reduce criticism of Israel. He claimed that the French government's remarks about recognizing the State of Palestine have objectively fueled anti-Semitic sentiment and violent incidents.
The French Foreign Ministry promptly issued a statement in response, saying: "France has noted the accusations made by US Ambassador Kushner. In his letter, he expressed concern over anti-Semitism and accused the French authorities of ineffective response." These accusations are unacceptable.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced that it will summon Kushner on Monday (the 25th).
Kushner's letter followed another letter from Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to Macron. Netanyahu also criticized Macron's words and deeds in promoting the recognition of the State of Palestine, arguing that this move actually fueled anti-Semitism.
Macron was once renowned in the European political arena for his strong criticism of Netanyahu's policy on the Gaza war, especially for the civilian casualties caused by the Israeli side. But Macron has also publicly emphasized on many occasions that anti-Semitism runs counter to the core values of France.
According to the records, Jared Kushner, the son of Kushner, married Ivanka Trump in 2009. Ivanka converted to Judaism before their marriage. The couple has three children and they are raised in accordance with Jewish traditions.
