Iranian human rights organizations: The Iranian government has set a record by executing at least 1,000 people this year

An Iranian human rights group headquartered in Norway released a report on Tuesday (September 23) stating that Iran has executed a record at least 1,000 people so far this year. It condemned the Iranian government for launching "massacres" in prisons to create an atmosphere of collective fear in the local community.

Iranian human rights groups say that at least 64 people have been executed in the past week alone, averaging more than nine per day. Although there are still more than three months until 2025, this year's data has already surpassed the highest record since it began collecting statistics in 2008, which was last year's 975 people.

Since the establishment of the theocratic government in the 1979 coup and the Iran-Iraq War, Iran has carried out large-scale executions of prisoners from the 1980s to the early 1990s. However, human rights organizations have pointed out that since the Iranian people launched demonstrations to challenge the theocrine government led by Khamenei between 2022 and 2023, and since the 12-day war with Israel broke out in June this year, the Iranian government has been conducting a more intense purge movement with the death penalty than in the past 30 years.

The director of the Iranian human rights organization, Mahmoud, issued a statement saying that without the international community taking action, the massacre in Iranian prisons is accelerating and expanding every day.

Iranian President Pezhishiyan is expected to hold a meeting with leaders from multiple countries at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Mahmoud said that it is unacceptable for any country based on human rights to engage in dialogue with Iran without touching upon this crisis of prisoner executions. He called on the United Nations to launch an investigation into Iran's crimes.
