U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has declared his support for, and often uses, the H-1B visa program for skilled foreign workers, siding with Musk, his key benefactor, amid a debate within the Republican Party over anti-immigration policies. But according to the New York Times, Trump's companies often use unskilled alien visas, which are fundamentally different.
Amid a heated debate among his supporters over the role of skilled immigrants in the U.S. economy, Trump told the New York Post on Saturday that his company uses H-1B visas "many times."
"My real estate company applied for a lot of H-1B visas," he said. I have always supported the H-1B program. I've used it many times. It's a great plan."
The H-1B visa allows skilled foreign workers, such as software engineers, to work in the United States for three years and can then be extended for another three years. At the end of the six years, if the visa holder's status has not changed (such as EB-2, EB-3, or other work type visas), they must leave the United States.
The tech industry warmly welcomed Trump's speech on Saturday.
However, the New York Times said Trump used an unskilled foreign visa, such as hiring a housekeeper. Trump appears to have made little use of the H-1B visa program, having long used the H-2B and H-2A visa programs, which are very different from the H-1B visa program.
H-2B visas are for hiring unskilled workers such as gardeners and housekeepers, while H-2A visas are for hiring agricultural workers; Both visas only allow foreign workers to stay in the United States for 10 months.
Over the past two decades, Trump's companies have hired more than 1,000 foreign workers through the two H-2 visa programs, according to federal data.
The New York Times has repeatedly asked the Trump transition team to clarify what kind of visa program Trump is talking about, and the Trump transition team has not responded.
Musk, the world's richest man who was born in South Africa and is now a US citizen, was also a former H-1B visa holder. This year, his electric car company Tesla received 724 H-1B visas.
