(Damascus, General News) The Interior Ministry of the Syrian Transitional Government said on Monday (February 23rd) that a checkpoint in the city of Raqqa, the capital of the northern Raqqa Province, was attacked by the extremist group Islamic State on that day, resulting in the deaths of four security personnel from the Interior Ministry and injuries to two others.

This is the most deadly attack launched by the Islamic State group against the government forces since the previous president Assad stepped down. Security forces killed one attacker on the spot and are currently pursuing the remaining armed personnel.

Reuters reported that the attack took place at a checkpoint in the western part of Raqqa city, indicating that the Islamic State group is intensifying its offensive against the Syrian transitional president, Ahmed Shara. Just two days ago, the group also announced a "new round of operations" against the Syrian government.

The Islamic State group has not yet issued a statement regarding the attack on Monday. Previously, the Islamic State group claimed on Saturday (the 21st) that it had carried out two attacks against government forces in northern and eastern Syria, resulting in the deaths of one soldier and one civilian.

The Islamic State group acknowledged another attack on Tuesday (the 24th), targeting a military headquarters in the city of Mayadin in Deir ez-Zor province, resulting in the death of one soldier. Just a few days ago, the group had carried out an attack in the same city.

The Syrian government improved relations with the United States last year and joined the international coalition led by the US to fight the Islamic State organization. In January this year, the Syrian government forces recaptured Raqqa from the Kurdish-led "Syrian Democratic Forces" and regained control of large areas in northern and eastern Syria.

According to three sources, US troops began to withdraw from their largest military base in northeastern Syria on Monday. This is part of a larger troop withdrawal operation by the US military. The US has been stationed in Syria for about ten years, with the main mission being to combat the Islamic State group.
