Elon Musk has been slammed by the British government for his comments about the riots

The British government has slammed US tech billionaire Elon Musk for comments he made on social media about far-right riots sweeping England and Northern Ireland.

One user posted on social media X, blaming the unrest on "the impact of mass immigration and open borders." "The English Civil War is inevitable," Musk said in a comment below the post on Sunday.

Attorney General Alexander criticized Musk's comments as "highly irresponsible."

Alexander said everyone should call for calm, especially Musk, who owns social media platform X. "The use of words like 'civil war' is absolutely unacceptable."

A spokesman for the British Prime minister also said Musk's comments were "nonsense" and that mob violence had no place on the streets or online.

According to British media reports, the X platform, which is owned by Musk, is believed to have exacerbated the riot.

False information circulated on social media claiming that the attacker in last week's stabbing attack in Southport was a Muslim immigrant, stoking potential anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim prejudice. Although the police had dismissed rumors that the suspects were neither immigrants nor Muslims, the rioters chose to ignore them.

British Prime Minister Starmer has warned that police will pursue those who organize incitement online. "If you incite violence again, whether online or offline, like those who are directly involved in rioting on the streets, the police will arrest, charge and prosecute," he said. Anyone found to have committed a criminal offence online will receive the same result."

On July 29, a knife attack in Southport, northwest England, left three children dead and sparked a wave of demonstrations across the United Kingdom. Rioters threw Molotov cocktails, looted shops and even attacked and torched police stations in some cities over the weekend, injuring police officers and people and arresting nearly 400 people.
