Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu ordered the military to "step on the gas" and intensify its efforts to combat the Hezbollah in Lebanon. Meanwhile, an American official stated that Hezbollah disregarded the warning to cease firing at Israel, and this conflict might threaten the negotiations between the United States and Iran.
Bloomberg reported that Netanyahu delivered a video speech on Monday (May 25th), stating that Israel is "in a state of war with Hezbollah", and that the Israeli army has killed over 600 Hezbollah militants in recent weeks, but will not ease its military pressure.
He said that Hezbollah is using drones, especially through the internet, to launch attacks against Israel, and the Israeli side has established a special team to deal with this threat.
Netanyahu said, "The Israeli military 'did not ease off the accelerator. On the contrary, I said we should step on the accelerator hard.'"
Both Hezbollah and Lebanese officials did not immediately comment.
Netanyahu did not mention in the video whether Israel plans to resume large-scale attacks on Beirut. After this video speech was released, the Israeli Defense Forces announced that they were launching a new round of air strikes against the "infrastructure" of Hezbollah in the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon. Since the ceasefire, the Bekaa Valley has rarely been attacked.
An American official said that Hezbollah "has repeatedly ignored calls to cease fire against Israel, including the latest ultimatum issued."
This official accused Hezbollah of attempting to undermine the negotiations between Israel and Lebanon by launching rockets and drones towards Israel. He said, "Israel will never stand idly by while its troops and civilians are attacked."
Xinhua News Agency quoted Israeli Channel 12 TV as reporting earlier on the 25th that a senior US official said that given the recent surge in drone attacks against Israel, the US might support Israel in taking larger-scale military actions against Hezbollah.
On April 17th, both sides of Lebanon agreed to a 10-day temporary ceasefire. This ceasefire was later extended several times. However, since its implementation, the Israeli army has continued to launch attacks on Hezbollah on the grounds that Hezbollah violated the ceasefire agreement. Moreover, they have also demolished and destroyed Hezbollah's military infrastructure in the southern part of Lebanon that was under Israeli occupation.
