The British Foreign Secretary warned on Monday (September 22) that Russia's invasion of NATO territory poses a risk of triggering armed conflict. Moscow immediately and strongly refuted, saying that Europe's concerns were groundless and "hysterical".
Reuters reported that at the UN Security Council meeting, British Foreign Secretary Cooper told the Russian side face to face: "Your reckless behavior may trigger direct armed confrontation between NATO and Russia." Our alliance is defensive, but please do not have illusions. We are ready to defend NATO's airspace and territory.
If we have to deal with aircraft flying in NATO airspace without permission, we will take action.
Estonia said on September 19 that three Russian mig-31 fighter jets entered its airspace without permission and stayed there for 12 minutes before being forced to withdraw. Western officials said the move was intended to test NATO's response ability and determination.
The Security Council held a meeting on Monday to discuss the matter, and NATO will also hold consultations on Tuesday (the 23rd).
Cooper's remarks were echoed by other Western ministers of the Security Council, who pointed out that such incidents have occurred repeatedly and cannot be simply attributed to "accidents".
Russia's deputy Permanent representative to the United Nations, Polansky, responded that Western countries have no evidence to support his accusations and criticized the accusations made by European powers as "groundless accusations".
We will not take part in this absurd play. When you decide to seriously discuss European security, the future of our common continent, and how to make this continent more prosperous and secure for all, we will be ready.
