The British government announced on Tuesday that the country will ban the sale and supply of wet wipes containing plastic components, stating that such products not only cause environmental pollution but are also the main culprit behind sewer blockages.
AFP reported that the UK's Environment Department issued a statement on Tuesday (November 18) saying that the measure, which will come into effect in early 2027, will make rivers, lakes and beaches cleaner and provide better protection for wildlife.
The UK water industry research organization has found that 94% of sewer blockages are caused by wet wipes, resulting in approximately 200 million pounds in maintenance costs for water companies each year.
