After the suspected assassination of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, American billionaire Elon Musk posted on the social media platform X, suggesting that no one tried to assassinate Democratic President Joe Biden or Vice President Harris, and was surprised. He then deleted the post.
Asked on Monday, the Secret Service said it was aware of Musk's post. The White House called Musk's post "irresponsible."
According to the New York Times and Reuters, Musk asked an X user the same morning: "Why would they want to assassinate Trump?" Did reply. Musk, who has endorsed Trump and frequently commented on the US presidential election, wrote: "Also, no one is trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala (Harris' name)."
Musk also added a thinking face emoji to the post.
The post sparked outrage online
The post was intercepted by X user and immediately sparked public outrage online. Musk later deleted the post, saying it was a joke. Musk has more than 197 million followers on X.
After Trump's apparent assassination attempt, Biden and Harris stressed that "political violence, or any violence, will never have a place in America" and expressed relief that Trump was safe.
White House spokesman Mark Bates on Monday reiterated statements by Biden and Harris that political violence should not be tolerated in the United States. "Violence should only be condemned, it should never be encouraged or made fun of," Bates said.
While Musk has deleted the post, the Secret Service, which protects current and former presidents, vice presidents and other key officials, took note.
A Secret Service spokesman said in an email to Reuters: "The Secret Service is aware of Elon Musk's social media posts. As a matter of practice, we do not comment on matters involving the protection of intelligence.
"But what we can say is that the Secret Service investigates all threats related to those we protect."
The spokesman declined to say whether Musk had been contacted by the Secret Service.
But Musk wrote on X: "Well, one lesson I've learned is that just because something I say makes a bunch of people laugh doesn't mean it's going to be as funny as a post on X."
"It turns out that if people don't understand the context of the post and just look at the plain text, the joke is not that funny."
