The US Senate passed a bill on Tuesday (October 28) aimed at overturning the tariff measures imposed by President Trump on Brazil.
Reuters reported that the bill was passed with 52 votes in favor and 48 against. Among them, five Republican lawmakers voted in favor.
It is reported that this bill will end the state of emergency that the Trump administration is currently using to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods.
This bill still needs to be voted on by the House of Representatives next, but it is widely believed that the bill will eventually be shelved. Republicans in the US House of Representatives have repeatedly voted to block legislative actions to overturn tariffs.
Democratic senators criticized that Trump's imposition of tariffs under the pretext of a false state of emergency has harmed the interests of American consumers. They vowed to push Congress to vote on multiple occasions to revoke these trade actions, as the prices of affected goods and raw materials rose, causing the cost of living for Americans to soar.
Some Republican lawmakers have warned that the bill could weaken Trump's ability to negotiate new trade agreements with other countries.
